Bacteriostatic water: research handling guide
Bacteriostatic water is the diluent most often used to reconstitute lyophilized research peptides. This guide covers what it is, how it differs from plain sterile water, how the water volume sets your concentration, and how it is stored in a research setting.
What is bacteriostatic water?
Bacteriostatic water is sterile water with a small amount of benzyl alcohol added, commonly at 0.9 percent, as a bacteriostatic agent. The benzyl alcohol slows the growth of bacteria, which is what makes the water suitable for a vial that will be accessed more than once over a period of days. In peptide research it is the standard fluid used to turn a freeze-dried powder back into a measured solution.
Bacteriostatic water vs sterile water
- Sterile water - no preservative, intended for a single use. Once opened it offers no ongoing protection against bacterial growth.
- Bacteriostatic water - contains benzyl alcohol, so a multi-use vial resists bacterial growth between draws. This is the form generally preferred for reconstituted research vials that are drawn from over several days.
- The practical difference - if a vial is accessed only once and discarded, either can serve; if it is stored and reused, the bacteriostatic form is the usual choice.
How the water volume sets concentration
There is no single correct amount of water to add. The volume you choose sets the concentration in milligrams per milliliter (mg/mL). Adding more water gives a lower concentration and a larger draw for the same amount of peptide; adding less gives a higher concentration and a smaller draw. For example, a 10 mg vial reconstituted with 2 mL of bacteriostatic water yields 5 mg/mL.

Handling and storage
- Before opening - unopened bacteriostatic water is kept at room temperature, protected from light.
- Adding to the vial - the water is directed slowly against the inside wall of the peptide vial, not sprayed onto the powder, then left to dissolve without shaking.
- After opening - refrigerate at roughly 2-8 °C and, as a general research guideline, use the reconstituted vial within about 28 days, consistent with the benzyl alcohol preservative window.
- Avoid repeated freeze-thaw cycles and vigorous agitation, which can degrade a reconstituted peptide.
