How long a research peptide stays stable depends mostly on one thing: whether it is still a dry powder or already in solution. This guide covers lyophilized versus reconstituted storage, fridge versus freezer, the role of light and temperature, and general stability windows used in research handling.

Two states, two shelf lives
Almost every peptide question about storage comes down to whether the vial is a lyophilized powder or a reconstituted solution. The powder is far more stable; the solution is on a shorter clock once bacteriostatic water is added.
- Lyophilized (freeze-dried) powder - the most stable form. Frozen and protected from light and moisture, many research peptides remain stable for months to a couple of years per the supplier's stability data. Refrigerated storage is generally fine for shorter windows.
- Reconstituted solution - once mixed and refrigerated, a general research guideline is to use it within about 28 days. This ties to the benzyl alcohol preservative in bacteriostatic water and to peptide stability in solution.
Fridge vs freezer
- Freezer - best for long-term storage of lyophilized powder. Cold and dark is the ideal environment for a dry peptide.
- Refrigerator (roughly 2-8 °C) - the working temperature for reconstituted solution, and a convenient short-term home for powder that will be used soon.
- Do not freeze reconstituted solution - freezing and thawing a solution is a common cause of degradation. Once a peptide is in water, keep it in the fridge, not the freezer.
What actually degrades a peptide
- Freeze-thaw cycles - repeated cycling is one of the most common causes of loss of integrity in research handling.
- Heat and light - warmth and UV exposure accelerate breakdown; vials are kept cold and dark.
- Agitation - shaking a reconstituted vial can stress the peptide; solutions are swirled gently, not shaken.
- Moisture in the powder - letting a cold vial warm to room temperature before opening reduces condensation inside the vial.
A simple storage routine
- Keep unopened powder frozen and dark until you are ready to reconstitute.
- Let a cold vial reach room temperature before adding water, to limit condensation.
- After reconstituting, label the vial with the date and store it in the refrigerator.
- As a general guideline, plan to use a reconstituted vial within about 28 days.
